Damn, the latest image for Ubuntu (24.04) is too big for a DVD. That's inconvenient, I'd like to have a DVD to use for installfests. Oh well, it is what it is.

LOL. Yes. The 24.04 Desktop image is oversized and meant to be used as an image for an Installer LiveUSB. The desktop image is 5.7GB. The Server Image is 2.6GB. The Server image will still fit on a standard DVD-R. But...
DVD-R DL capacity is 8.5GB. BlueRay capacity is more, sizes dependent if they are single (25GB), dual (50GB), triple (100GB) or quad layer (128GB).
